CBI, ACB Chandigarh arrested an Income Tax Officer while
demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.20,000/- from the complainant
who is a businessman of Ludhiana in lieu of settling a notice
on Income Tax Return filed by the complainant for the year
2001-2002. The said matter of notices on ITRs was pending
with the ITO since September 2004 and he had demanded a bribe
of Rs.40,000/- to settle the issue. The complainant requested
the accused officer to reduce the bribe money and the accused
officer agreed to receive Rs.20,000/-. Meanwhile, the complainant
approached CBI,Chandigarh. After verification, a trap was
laid today and the accused I.T. Officer was caught red-handed
in Ludhiana while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.20,000/-.
Search of residential premises of the arrested is in progress
at Amritsar. The arrested official is posted in the office
of the Commissioner, Income Tax-I' Ludhiana.
