The Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil is leaving tomorrow on a three-day (12-14 February) visit of Tsunami-hit areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In Port Blair, the Minister will review the progress of rehabilitation and reconstruction work with the Lt. Governor and senior officers of the Union territory administration. He will also visit relief camps and discuss rehabilitation needs with local people in Car Nicobar, Nancowry and Nicobar group of Islands.
At a meeting held with senior officers of his ministry here yesterday evening, the Home Minister reviewed the progress of rehabilitation and reconstruction work in the Islands. He was informed that the despatch of building materials from the mainland for construction of temporary shelters has begun and the shipping schedule for the current month finalised. Construction sites have been identified and designs of shelters finalised. The effort is to use the locally available building material to the extent possible. The Home Minister directed that all efforts be made to complete the construction of temporary shelters before the onset of Monsoons. He desired that provision for schools and health centres be made in the clusters of temporary shelters. The Home Minister was informed of the progress of reconstruction work of damaged jetties and roads. Shri Patil directed that the task be given utmost priority and finished at the earliest.
