Group of Minister on Tourism Industry and Trade in its meeting held under the chairmanship of the Minister for Human Resource Development, Shri Arjun Singh has recommended the visa-on-arrival for selected countries on an experimental basis in Delhi and Mumbai. The group has also recommended increase in air seat capacity to key source tourism markets for India and to allow foreign airlines to operate during peak period without any commercial agreements.
The Group of Ministers consisting of Minister of State for Tourism, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development, Minister for Culture and Information & Broadcasting, Minister for Commerce and Industry, Minister for Civil Aviation, Minister for Overseas Industry and Minister of State for urban Poverty Alleviation discussed various other issues also including shortage of hotel accommodation.
The Group decided to set up a task force with representatives of Ministry of Railways, Civil Aviation, Urban Development, Tourism, Delhi Development Authority, Planning Commission, Finance Corporation of India and tourism industry representatives to look into the modalities of augmenting accommodation capacity in the country and in Delhi. The Task Force will also consider permitting the setting up of hotels on land allotted on lease basis, private land and on the land falling within a periphery of 4 kms of international airports, with public-private partnership to meet the growing demand for rooms in metros cities.
In the meeting, it was also decided that an Immigration Facilitation Group will be set up very soon for effecting improvements in the immigration functions at the international airports.
