In an effort to bridge the rural-urban divide in the field of telecommunication, the Government has made a provision of Rs.1200 crore under the Universal Service Obligation(USO) Fund. In 2005-06, 1687 sub-divisions will get the support of USO Fund for Rural Household Telephones. By the end of January 2005, the Government released 1700 crore to the USO Fund. To increase the rural share of tele-density, BSNL has undertaken to provide Village Public Telephones in the next three years to the remaining 66,822 revenue villages.
