exhibition - indian sports through the ages inaugurated

The Exhibition – ‘Indian Sports through the Ages’ got underway at the National Archives of India (NAI) today. Organized by NAI on the occasion of Archives Week Celebrations, 2005, the Exhibition was inaugurated by Shri K. Jayakumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, in the presence of cricketing legend Kapil Dev, who was the guest of honour.

The Exhibition seeks to depict the myriad aspects of India sports. On view will be several interesting documents, paintings etc., on various games, which will be of great interest to sports lovers. Historical manuscripts, catalogues, paintings and archival heritage shed ample light on the rich tradition of games and sports.

India has a rich legacy of sports, which dates to the Vedic Era. Many popular games like chess, wrestling, polo, archery are believed to have originated a sport in India and it was from here that they are transmitted to foreign countries where they were further modernize. Our documentary heritage is replete with treatises and chapters recommending sports not only as a means for systematic physical exercise and leisure but also as a medium for the development of personality.

The Exhibition will be open for public viewing till 23rd March, 2005 from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. from Monday to Sunday.
