environment friendly toilet system on railways

Monday, February 21, 2005

Indian Railways have begun installing environment friendly coach toilet discharge system in the new coaches being turned out from this financial year onward, as part of Technology Mission on Railway Safety at Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), the Research and Development Unit of the Railways.

This follows a policy by the Ministry of Rural Development, envisaging total sanitation by the year 2012 and elimination of open defecation all over the country.

Environment friendly toilet, popularly known as Modular Toilet, is akin to the airways. It stops discharging in the stationary train, thus preventing pollution at stations and corrosion of tracks and its fittings. It starts discharging when the train is at a speed of 30 kilometres per hour and more. Hence, eco-friendly.
