Indian Railways have planned to modernize 40 freight terminals during 2005-2010 to provide facilities for full length rake handling, engine on-load working, adequate shunting necks, illumination of round the clock working and weigh bridges.
The modernization of freight terminals will provide quicker loading and unloading of rakes, improved turnaround of wagons and customer satisfaction. Modernization of terminals will also remove capacity bottlenecks.
At present, most of the terminals on Indian Railways, other than those which are part of the industrial sidings, suffer from capacity constraints in terms of inadequate infrastructure.
