commission for economically backward classes

The Union Cabinet today approved the reconstitution of the Commission for Economically Backward Classes (EBCs). The tenure of the Commission expired on January 5, 2005. The terms of reference of the reconstituted Commission shall be:


a) to elicit the views of the State Governments/Union Territories and others on the subject;

b) to recommend the welfare measures and quantum of reservation in education and Government employment in consultation with the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities;

c) to suggest criteria for identification of economically backward classes; and

d) to suggest the necessary constitutional, legal and administrative modalities as required for the implementation of their recommendations.

The Commission shall consist of a Chairperson, one Member and one Member-Secretary and supporting officers/staff. The Commission will submit its recommendations within a period of six months.
