For an effective development of National Highways in India, the Finance Minister proposes to increase the cess on petrol and diesel by 50 paise per litre, for this would raise additional resources for National Highways Development Project. The additional resources will be earmarked exclusively for National Highways and a suitable amendment is being proposed to the Central Road Fund Act, 2000 to this effect.
