CBI ARRESTS ASSISTANT PROVIDENT FUND COMMISSIONER

The CBI has arrested an Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation who had amassed assets worth nearly one crore rupees. During the searches at his residence and his locker, CBI found a total cash amount of Rs.47 lakh. It is interesting to note that the officer concerned had joined the service only during 1999. The official is being produced before a Court in Delhi today for his remand.

The modus operandi of the officer was to send notices to various private companies/firms under his jurisdiction threatening inspections under the EPF Act and subsequently extort money from them. The officer was also known to collect bribes in a regular manner for the job of allocation of EPF codes to the various firms/companies working as labour/manpower contractors. During the course of searches, details of some of these companies/firms and the specific amounts paid by them to the officer have also been recovered.

During the course of searches at his residence at Saharanpur and office at Chandigarh and a place in Bangalore, CBI recovered documents relating to acquisition of a three-storeyed house at Mandakini Vihar, Saharanpur worth Rs.24 lakh, a flat at Vaishali,Ghaziabad worth Rs.15 lakh and a Car worth Rs.3 lakh. Documents relating to Fixed Deposits, NSCs and Post Office Savings amounting to Rs.11 lakh and cash worth Rs.1.75 lakh were also recovered. During searches at Saharanpur, keys relating to three lockers were also seized. On opening of the lockers, a total amount of cash worth about Rs.45 lakh and jewellery worth Rs.one lakh were found by CBI.
