capital formation increases by 26.3 per cent

rate lower than saving

The gross domestic capital formation increased at current prices from Rs.610288 crore in 2002-03 to Rs.726868 crore during 2003-04. At constant prices also it rose to Rs.449539 crore from Rs.395163 crore. Percentage-wise the gross capital formation at current prices was 26.3 per cent higher against 24.8 per cent in the previous year. However, the rate of capital formation during the period was lower than that of the savings, because of the decline in the net capital inflow from abroad, during 2003-04. The gross domestic saving at current prices was 28.1 per cent of GDP.

The rate of Net capital formation at current prices also showed an increase of 18.9 per cent against 16.9 per cent during 2002-03. Within the gross capital formation, the gross Fixed capital formation at current prices totalled Rs.627307 crore during 2003-04 against Rs.547950 crore in the previous year. The gross fixed capital formation of the public sector as well as that of the private corporate sector also increased during the period. In case of the household sector also, it rose considerably during the year under report.

According to the Quick Estimates of Central Statistical Organisation, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation the change in stocks of inventories, measured as additions to stocks, declined at current prices from Rs.10008 crore in 2002-03 to Rs.8387 crore during 2003-04. Only in case of private corporate sector, increase was observed in the change in stocks of inventories, while it showed declining trend in both public sector as well as the house hold sector.
