The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) fell by one point each during January 2005. The index for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers decreased to 341 and 343 points respectively.
In case of Agricultural Labourers 11 states reflected a decrease in indices ranging between 1 to 6 points while six states showed an increase ranging between 1 to 3 points. In three states the index remained constant.
In case of Rural Labourers 11 states reflected a decrease in indices ranging between 1 to 5 points while seven states showed an increase ranging between 1 to 4 points. The index remained constant in two states.
Orissa experienced sharpest decrease of 6 points for Agricultural Labourers whereas in case of Rural Labourers Assam, Orissa and Tripura recorded a maximum decrease of 5 points each. The decrease has been mainly due to fall in prices of rice, dry fish, fresh fish, onions and vegetables & fruits. On the other hand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan recorded a maximum increase of four points each for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers mainly due to increase in prices of rice, wheat atta, jawar, bajra, maize, sugar, gur, bus fare etc.
Andhra Pradesh with 359 points figured at the top of the index table for Agricultural Labourers whereas Andhra Pradesh and Haryana with 359 points topped in case of Rural Labourers. Manipur remained at the bottom of the index with 304 points each for Agricultural labourers and Rural Labourers.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL and CPI-RL decreased by 0.30 percentage point each from the previous month to stand at 2.71% and 2.69% respectively in January 2005. Respective rates of inflation during January 2004 were 3.75% and 3.73 %.
