The Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram has proposed to increase the allocation for Mid-day Meal Scheme from Rs. 1,675 crore in 2004-05 to Rs. 3,010 crore in the new proposals. Making this announcement, the Finance Minister informed that presently 11 crore children are being covered under the scheme and the Centre is now providing the cost of food grains as well as the conversion cost at the rate of Re. one per child.
