Sunday, February 06, 2005

In a major initiative to help the managers in the country to hone their skills, the six leading Indian Institutes of Management have now decided to start additional courses and increase the intake in many existing courses from the coming academic year. The decision followed a directive from the Human Resource Development Minister, Shri Arjun Singh to the Directors of the IIMs to broadbase their activities in the light of the changing profile of the country’s economy.

Some of the new courses are Executive MBA at IIM- Ahmedabad (50 Seats); One Year Global Managers’ Programme (GMP- 30 Seats), One Year Programme Programme on Leading and Managing (80 Seats), One Year Programme for Development of Entrepreneurs and Managers turned Entrepreneurs (PDSE-300 Seats) at IIM- Calcutta; 6 Month Certificate Programme in Management for Defence Officers at the NOIDA Campus of IIM-Lucknow (50 Seats) and Executive MBA through Distant Education Module at IIM- Kozhikode (100 Seats).

The existing Programmes in which the intake has been increased are the Fellow Programme in Management ( From 15 to 20) and Fellow Development Programme (From 30 to 40) at IIM- Ahmedabad); Post Graduate Programme(from 180 to 260) and Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management (from 120 to 150) at IIM- Bangalore; Post Graduate Programme (from 240 to 260) and Post Graduate Programme in Agro-Business Management (from 30 to 60) at IIM- Lucknow; Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management in Mangement (from 20 to 60) and Post Graduate Programme in Management (from 120 to 180) at IIM- Kozhikode).

The six IIMs have also provided a record amount of about Rs. 2.35 Crores need based financial assistance to the students in the current academic year. IIM- Ahmedabad leads the table having provided Rs. 69.78 lakhs in assistance. This is followed by IIM- Bangalore (Rs. 58.08 Lakhs), IIM- Lucknow (Rs. 43. 70 Lakhs), IIM-Kozhikode( Rs. 26 Lakhs), IIM- Calcutta (Rs. 20.5 Lakhs) and IIM- Indore (Rs. 16.50 Lakhs). It may be recalled that on 29th June, 2004, a meeting of the Chairmen and directors of IIMs was held under the Chairmanship of Shri Arjun Singh, Union Minister for Human Resource Development. In this meeting the IIMs undertook to ensure that no student faces any difficulty in pursuing education at the IIMs for want of financial resources. All students whose family & parental income is upto 2 lakh a year are to benefit under the scheme finalized by the Board of Governors of all IIMs. It is in that context that the IIMs have granted above mentioned financial assistance to the students under their Need Based Financial Assistance Programme. This is also in consonance with Common Minimum Programme of the present Government that nobody will be denied professional education because he/she is poor.
