Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that invented Viagra and changed the lifestyle of millions, is all set to roll out its blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug brand, Viagra, in India this week after what many see as a long wait.

Viagra is expected to be launched in all major cities simultaneously at a price considered competitive.

There are about 11 generic brands available in the domestic market, some of whom have similar sounding names. These are priced in the range of Rs 180 to Rs 200 per strip of 10 pills.

Pfizer had launched Viagra in regulated markets abroad but had yet to introduce the product in India.
Indian pharmaceutical companies have been flooding the local market with generic versions after Pfizer's US and European launches. So Pfizer was reluctant to introduce Viagra in India fearing generic competition.

Leading pharmaceutical firms like Zydus Cadila, Ranbaxy, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Kopran and Torrent Pharma, are among the pharmaceutical companies which have launched Sildenafil Citrate based drugs since 2001.
