L K Advani chose the time and occasion to step down,
and was also formally consulted about his successor.
The new President of BJP is Rajnath Singh, former Chief
Minister of Uttar Pradesh becomes the new leader of
the party.
As always happens, his name has been finalized after
due consultations with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
leadership and the two senior leaders of the party Atal
Bihari Vajpayee and Advani," he said.
Singh has in the recent past led the party to outstanding
victories in the Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand elections.
His name will be formally announced in during the
silver jubilee celebrations organized at Mumbai. Singh
will initially be president for a year, after which
the party will elect a president for a full term.
