The Bombay High Court has directed the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) to go ahead with the demolition of illegal structures as per its earlier order.

The court has also ordered that extra security be provided to the demolition squad. The demolition had been stopped after strong public protests by the local residents. The situation in the town is tense with an all-party bandh, called in protest of the large scale demolitions, entering the second day on Wednesday.

The court was hearing a petition of Ulhasnagar residents, which was moved to stay the court's order after the same was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Pappu Kalani local RPI MLA from Ulhasnagar has said that 90 % of the buildings are illegal and a civil war is likely if the demolitions are carried out.
