The first test match between India and Srilanka has
been called off due to rains. After a couple of days
of clear weather, Chennai city witnessed heavy rains
in the wee hours of Friday.
As the sky remained overcast and the sun was yet to
show up, the possibility of play commencing before lunch
appeared remote.
The covers were still on and the ground staff led by
curator K parthasarathy, were engaged in mopping up
operations. Super soppers were being used to absorb
the water from the ground, a majority of which had been
covered.
With the met office forecasting more rains despite the
cyclone, which weakened into a deep depression and lay
centred about 300 km east of Chennai, this test would
also be at the mercy gods.
On all the three previous occasions when matches were
held here, rains had the last laugh.
In October 2003, the ODI between India and New Zealand
was washed out and in 2004 the final day's play of the
tantalisingly-poised second test between India and Australia
was abandoned.
More recently, the third ODI between India and South
Africa on 22nd November was rained off without a ball
being bowled.
