Filmmaker Ramanand Sagar is no more

Veteran filmmaker, writer, director and producer Ramanand Sagar,87 passed away at his Juhu residence, late monday night.

Sagar, had been ailing for the last three months, according to his son Prem Sagar. He is survived by wife, five sons and a daughter.

Sagar was born at Asal Guru Ke near Lahore, Pakistan in 1917. He started his film career with the silent movie Raiders of the Rail Road in 1936 at a time when little was known about this new medium. He also wrote a novel 'Aur Insaan Mar Gaya.'.

In 1950, Sagar launched his own film production company Sagar Art Corporation with 'Mehmaan' being his first film.

He produced and directed as many as 50 films, including films like Insaniyat, Kohinoor, Pegaam, Ghunghat, Zindagi, Aankhen, Lalkar, Aarzoo, Geet and Bagavat.

Sagar created history with the longest running television serial Ramayana which had the highest TRPs of its time. Its impact was so great and Doordarshan's reach so wide, that Sunday mornings when the serial was telecast, Mumbai roads would be deserted.

Ramanand Sagar will be cremated on Tuesday.
