Mumbai: MMRDA is undertaking efforts to make driving in
the city enjoyable. By July 2006, the MMRDA plans to not only
improve the roads, but also fit up to date signboards on all
roads — big or small, to make life easy for the drivers.
Currently, under the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP)
and Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), the Santacruz-Chembur
link road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road, Western Express
Highway, Eastern Express Highway, SV Road and LBS Marg will
receive immediate face-lifts.
The roads will be made smoother to provide respite from the
bumpy rides. Also, the latest signage will have creative overarches,
that will facilitate precise and detailed area-wise directions,
according to MMRDA officials. Referring to an illustration,
an official mentioned, “You will know about the directions
to most of the landmarks of a place, like the National park
while traveling to Borivali or for that matter, Bhagwati Hospital.
The signage will also give added facts about each place.”
Curved, rust-free steel frames (with a durability of at least
25 years) will replace the present steel frames that house
square boards giving out directions to drivers. The MMRDA
also hopes to design more lively and helpful signages. The
minimum readability distance of these signages is set at about
200 m. At present, 100 m is the distance one has to be in,
to be able to clearly read the signboards.
Most Mumbaikars would appreciate the efforts, finally initiated
to provide drivers with some thing to cheerfully, ‘steer’
about.
