Doordarshan Goofs Up

Though Doordarshan named Vijay Shankar in its news, the official web site of CBI stated that Shri Uma Shankar Misra, Director CBI retired today after completing his two years tenure. Shri Misra handed over charge of Director, CBI to Shri J.K.Dutt, senior-most Additional Director in the investigating agency.

Being asked by the press persons what would be his priorities Shri Dutt said that continuing with the Anti-Corruption Drives will be one of his priorities. He said that these drives in the past have yielded good results. Lauding the efforts of Shri Misra in getting Abu Salem and Monica Bedi extradited to India, Shri Dutt said, his priority will also be to get extradited the other fugitives from abroad. In this connection, he said that the new notice, apart from the red-corner notice, which has been decided to be issued by the Interpol will be of great help in extraditing terrorists.

Shri J.K. Dutt is an IPS Officer of the 1971 batch (West Bengal Cadre). He has been functioning as Additional Director in the CBI since March, 2005. Earlier tto, Shri Dutt has held important positions in CBI from 1985 to 1992 as S.P. and D.I.G. mainly dealing with Anti- Corruption Cases. Then, again from 1995 to 2002, Shri Dutt had held the position of Joint Director supervising Anti-Corruption Cases of North Zone, besides Special Crime and Administration. Shri Dutt was associated with the investigation of a number of sensitive cases entrusted to CBI by the Supreme Court and the High Courts including Purulia Air-dropping of Arms case that ended in conviction of the accused persons. Shri Dutt had served at Kharagpur, Durgapur, 24 Parganas, Distt. Cooch Bihar, Siliguri and Sealdah GRP. He has also served in the difficult areas of North-Eastern States of Tripura and Sikkim for which he was awarded the Antarik Surakshya Medal. While in Tripura, at Shri Dutt''s initiative, a Police Hospital Building was completed and made functional for police personnel and their families. Shri Dutt has also served in the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for a brief period during 1995.

Shri Dutt received his education from Mayo College, Ajmer and from St. Stephen''s College, Delhi and holds a Post Graduate Degree in History from Delhi University. He has been awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry in 1977, Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1988 and the President''s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1997.

Interestingly, Doordarshan, considered the mouthpiece of the government, claimed that Vijay Shanker, a 1969 batch IPS officer of UP cadre who was awarded the President's police medal for distinguished and meritorious services, has been appointed as the new CBI Director following the retirement of incumbent U S Misra on 6th December. The news went on, " Shankar's name was cleared by the Appointments Committe of the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh late Friday.
