What is being seen as the influence of the long arm of Ambanis has resulted in an amendment that will bring the cops at the doors of the power thieves.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for introduction of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2005 in the Parliament.

Following are the amendments in the Electricity Act, 2003:

Central Government will also share the responsibility of rural electrification. The Amendment will clarify that the police, at the instance of the appropriate Government, or appropriate Commission, or authorised persons, would be able to investigate cognizable offences under the Act.

This would fulfil the assurance made in the NCMP for carrying out review of the Electricity Act, 2003.
