Troy Cooley who helped guide England's pace bowling
attack for the past two years has been hired by Cricket
Australia as fast bowling coach. He is a former first-class
bowler for Tasmnia state, will begin work in May of
next year, six months out from the 2006-2007 Ashes series
in Australia. Australia lost the Ashes to England for
the first time in 17 years this year.
Cooley, who was praised for his work with England's
Ashes-wining pace attack of Steve Harmison, Andrew Flintff,
Simon Jones and Matthew Hoggard, will be based in Brisbane
as head of the Centre of Excellence fast bowling programme.
He has been England's fast bowling coach since May 2003
after having worked at the old Australian Cricket Academy
in Adelaide.
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland
said filling the fast bowling coaching position was
a high priority following a post-Ashes review. "Troy
was our first choice, the players from captain down
rate him highly, and his work in England speaks for
itself," Sutherland said.
"We are delighted he has agreed to return home
to take on his important role as we move ahead with
our plans for the Ashes tour herein 2006-07 and for
theICC World Cup in the West Indies in 2007," he
said.
