Mumbai: Colleges in Mumbai may possibly raise the fees
for conventional courses like Arts, Commerce and form
the upcoming academic year. This decision comes as a
result of cases where the colleges have charged additional
fees, contrary to the framework decided by the Naresh
Chandra Committee in 2003.
The Mumbai University has directed the city colleges
to confer with the Supreme Court appointed Shikshan
Shulk Samiti before reworking the fee structure. The
pro vice-chancellor of the University, AD Sawant said,
"The university is abiding by the state government's
directives." The state government had approved
a resolution (GR) in April 2003, declaring that all
grant-in-aid colleges, including the non-professional
ones, would have to seek advice from the Samiti for
their fee structure.
The Samiti has, however, not yet acted on the proposal.
The Samiti, chaired by Justice SD Pandit has maintained
that it would decide as to whether it could configure
the fee framework for the non-professional colleges,
in the meeting with the university on December 19.
On the other hand, the colleges across the city are
insisting on an unvarying fee structure. Most colleges
feel that more than the Arts and Commerce faculties,
the Science faculty needs reconsideration of fees to
facilitate the maintenance of laboratories.
