The police arrested Samajwadi Party worker Shahid Azmi on Thursday afternoon for rioting. Abhay Solutkar, site manager of the Deewan Group of builders and developers has registered a case against Azmi and a dozen others at the Bandra Kurla Complex police station on December 11. The accused include Rajya Sabha MP Abu Asim Azmi and his brother, Kasim Azmi.

The police version is that Samajwadi Party workers tried putting up a board at a construction site being developed by Deewan Group. It read: 'Developers — Abu Azmi commercial centre'. "When workers employed by the Deewan Group tried to stop the Samajwadi men, Shahid and others attacked them.

The construction site at Mohammedi Estate, Motilal Nagar, Santacruz (East} belongs to the MMRDA.

Abu Azmi, however, denied that his party workers had tried to grab the land. He claims that"The place belongs to Arora Builders, and we were given authorization by them to develop the land."
