Help for Tsunami Affected Areas

HUDCO has earmarked a sum of Rs. 2000 crores, which will be made available for lending related to the construction and rehabilitation works in the Tsunami affected areas. A special loan scheme of HUDCO has been floated for the repairs, retrofitting and reconstruction of new houses for the economically weaker sections at a highly subsidized interest rate of upto 6.5% for the calamity affected regions. This is against 7.5% presently applicable for EWS Schemes, which itself is among the lowest lending rates offered by any lending institution for economically weaker section category.


HUDCO has also contributed Rs. One crore to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, and also earmarked additional Rs. One crore for construction of relief shelters with disaster resistant technologies, through Building Centers.

Mini Ratna Status to HUDCO

In pursuance of the policy objective to make the public sector more efficient and competitive, Mini Ratna status was granted to HUDCO (Housing & Urban Development Corporation) on 27th August, 2004 to give it more financial and operational autonomy.


Dividend Paid to Government


HUDCO paid dividends of over Rs.102 crores for the year 2003-04 and also as interim dividend for the current year to the Government . The total payment comprises of Rs. 66.49 Crores as dividend for the year 2003-2004 wherein HUDCO earned a net profit of Rs. 332.44 crores as against Rs. 266.54 crores last year.


Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojana (SJSRY)


With a view to ameliorate the living conditions of the urban poor, the Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojana (SJSRY) is being implemented by the Ministry of Urban Employment & Poverty Alleviation, as a centrally Sponsored Scheme on all Inida basis, for the benefit of the urban poor. This programme seeks to provide gainful employment to the urban unemployed or underemployed poor through encouragement of self employment ventures to be set up by those who have read upto 9th standard and through provision of wage employment by unitlizing their labour for construction of socially and economically useful public assets. This programme is funded in the ratio of 75:25 as between the Centre and the States.


Since inception of the scheme up to 2003-04 a sum of Rs. 700.97 crore was released to the States/UTs. During 2004-05, an amount of Rs. 99.10 crore has been tentatively allocated for States/UTs out of which, by now, an amount of Rs. 64.78 crore has been released to various States/UTs under this Scheme.


Under Self-employment component of SJSRY, 5.5 lakh beneficiaries have been assisted by now and 6.3 lakh persons were provided various skills training. About 1.25 lakh Thrift & Credit Societies have been formed under SJSRY. The number of beneficiaries covered under the Community Structure Component of SJSRY is 325 lakh and number of man days of work generated under the wage employment component of SJSRY is 519.18 lakh.
