world heritage status to nilgiri mountain railway

Indian Railways has applied for inscription of Nilgiri Mountain Railway as a World Heritage Site. A UNESCO expert had visited Nilgiri Mountain Railway during September, 2004 for inspection of the property with respect to the nomination application filed by Indian Railways, and his recommendation will be submitted directly to UNESCO. The contents of his recommendation are not known.

Nomination dossiers for Shri Hariminder Sahib, Amritsar; and Majuli Island is Assam have been submitted to the World Heritage Centre for consideration of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

This information was given by Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
