tsunami de-warning - press note

Thursday, December 30, 2004

An alert message was issued on the basis of a warning from Australian Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre received from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) as an abundant caution. As indicated in the message, information available has been analysed and assessed by IMD. It has been reported by IMD that no earthquake of large (>7.5) magnitude has occurred in Sumatra Arch Region during the 12-hour period. IMD is constantly monitoring the seismic activity in the region. It has, therefore, been decided to stand down the alert message. However, in view of the continued after shocks which are generally accompanied with such events, the State Government may be vigilant without affecting the normal life.
