A meeting of the State Higher Education Ministers is being convened in Bangalore in the first half of next month to consider the issue of enactment of a central legislation to control self-financing institutes. This was disclosed by the Human Resource Development Minister, Shri. Arjun Singh to a delegation of Students’ Federation of India (SFI), All India Students’ Block(AISB) and All India Progressive Students’ Union which met him here today. Shri. Singh said that education being a subject in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, the meeting is necessary to arrive at a consensus on the issue. In their representation, the three Student Organisations have demanded the enactment of a Central Legislation empowering the State Governments to control the unaided self-financing institutes. They have demanded a complete control on the deemed universities and de-recognition of substandard institutes. The Unions have also called for halting the process of commercialization of education.
