The Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Shakeel Ahmad will visit the Tsunami affected areas of Andaman and Nicobar Islands tomorrow, to oversee the restoration work of communication facilities.
Meanwhile, following is the update of the restoration of telecom services in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the past twenty-four hours by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). A hotline is being commissioned between C-in-C, Andaman & Nicobar at Port Blair and Disaster Management OPS Room in South Block, New Delhi. Two telephone exchanges at Ferrarjunj and Hurbutabad have been restored. One 256 Port (Lines) CDOT exchange is under testing in Port Blair which will be sent to Campbell Bay along with switching installation team by air. Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) Team is leaving for Rangat for restoration of OFC link between Shivapuram and Swidesh Nagar. One MCPC (Multi-Channel Per Carrier) terminal is under testing in Port Blair Satellite Station which will be airlifted to Car Nicobar today.
INMARSAT Terminals, one each, were sent to Car Nicobar, Campbell Bay, Kamorta and Hut Bay (Little Andaman). One such terminal is also being shipped to Katchal. For all the 15 INMARSAT terminals of the Local Administration as also the additional terminals sent by the BSNL, the CGM Eastern Telecom Region has been asked to provide small capacity Engine Alternators (Generators).
