Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary company of Coal India Limited (CIL) has taken adequate steps as stipulated in the Environmental Management Plan and Project Report of each approved mine for back filling of excavated mine void and rehabilitation of land. The steps involved are back filling of the de-coaled area, leveling/ terracing, spreading of top soil over the back filled area and biological reclamation/ plantation over it. A time tag is required between physical and biological reclamation for stabilization of back filled dump. Plantation is being done through Government agency and about 2,500 plants per hectare are being planed.
The progress of reclamation and rehabilitation of mined out land in MCL is satisfactory. The total area of land excavated and required to be reclaimed by November 2004 is 2,338 hectares, area of land physically or technically reclaimed is 1,645 hectares and area of plantation done on reclaimed land is 1,116 hectares. Total 37 lakh plantation has been done in MCL since its inception.
