The Namasudra, Poundra and Mato, Bengali Scheduled Castes have not been recognised by the Government as Scheduled Castes in their respective states of migration and resettlement.
As regard inclusion of Namasudra, Poundra and Majhi (not Mato) communities in the list of Scheduled Castes in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal, the concerned states Governments had been requested to furnish the ethnographic details. No time frame can however, be assigned in the matter as the proposals require consultation with various agencies and that any amendment in the list of Scheduled Castes can be done only by an Act of Parliament in view of provision of Article 341 (2) of the Constitution of India.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Smt. Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
