ratification of ilo convention on seafarers’ identity documents

The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for ratifying the ILO Convention No. 108 concerning Seafarers’ Identity Documents adopted by the International Labour Conference at its 41st (Maritime) Session held in Geneva, 1958. It has also been decided to Communicate the decision of the Government to ratify Convention No. 108 to the Director General, ILO in accordance with Article 19 of the ILO Constitution.

The Seafarers’ Identify Documents Convention No.108 has already been ratified by over 60 countries. This Convention is very important for India because India is a major supplier of manpower for the international shipping industry. Therefore, Indian laws and practices have already been brought into conformity with the provisions of the Convention. The ratification of this Convention would ensure the Indian seafarers free access to employment opportunities, adequate safety and protection or right and freedom from any sort of exploitation and India will fulfill its obligation under Article 19 of the ILO Constitution.
