Indian Railways carried 383.81 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight during the eight months of the current financial year ending November 2004 compared to 358.27 MTs of such freight during the corresponding period of the previous year, representing an increase of 25.54 MTs over the corresponding period of the previous year. The target of 377.21 MTs for the period was exceeded by 6.60 MTs.
The annual freight target for the current fiscal year 2004-2005 is 580 MTs, which is likely to be exceeded given the buoyancy in the core sector of the national economy.
During November 2004, a total of 48.61 MTs of revenue freight was transported, registering an increase of 1.63 MTs compared to 46.98 MTs during the corresponding month of the last year.
