railways’ contribution to prime minister’s national relief fund

The Union Minister of Railways, Shri Lalu Prasad has contributed Rs. Thirty lakhs to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund from the Railway Minister’s Welfare and Relief Fund to supplement the relief and rehabilitations measures for the tsunami earthquake victims in the Southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Pondicherry.

In addition, the Ministry of Railways has offered all possible assistance to the concerned State Governments and the Union Territory administrations. The Railways assistance includes deputation of Railway doctors to reinforce State Government health facilities, services of Railway Scouts and Civil Defence personnel to support local relief operations, assistance of essential items like blankets, clothing, plastic sheets etc., transportation of relief material to affected sites from all over the country within the Central Government guidelines. The other measures include priority in booking and transportation of relief material and personnel.

In addition, General Managers of Southern and South Central Railways have been directed to coordinate relief efforts with the local State Governments and Crisis Management Teams.
