railway’s assistance to state governments for tsunami hit people

The Ministry of Railways has offered all possible assistance to the State Governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, hit by Tsunami after the earthquake on December 26, 2004, to provide relief to the affected local communities.

The Ministry has ordered deputation of Railway Doctors to reinforce State Government’s health facilities, provide services of Railway Scouts and Civil Defence personnel as volunteers to support local relief operations and assistance of essential items like blankets, clothing and plastic sheets from the Railway Minister’s Welfare and Relief Fund at specific locations. The Railways will also assist in transportation of relief material to affected sites from various parts of the country within the Central Government guidelines. The Railways will give priority in booking and transportation of relief personnel.

In addition, General Managers of Southern and South-Central Railways have been asked to coordinate relief efforts with the local State Governments and Crisis Management Teams.
