Rabi oilseed sowing in the country this year has been reported 89.40 lakh hectares (l ha). This is almost six lakh hectare more than of corresponding period of last year and 14 l ha more than the normal. As per inputs from the States on 10th of this month, rapeseed, mustard and sunflower have taken major slot in rabi oilseeds area. The crop wise coverage in lakh hectares till 10th December, 2004 is as given below:-

Rapeseed and mustard coverage and condition of crop is satisfactory. Sowing of pure mustard crop in Uttar Pradesh is completed and sowing as mixed crop with wheat is still continuing. Sowing of these crops in Rajasthan and Haryana is over, whereas sowing of groundnut has just started in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Pulses have been sown in 95.59 l ha against last years of 103.87 l ha. Gram has been sown in 57.62 l ha against 62.11 l ha by this time last year; moong, 2.24 l ha against 1.84 l ha, urd in 3.47 l ha against 3.52 l ha and pea covered 7.39 l ha as compared to 6.5 l ha this time last year.
Rabi main crop wheat sowing has started in most of the states. So far wheat has been sown in 171.18 l ha as compared to 189.75 l ha last. The total area under rice so far is 6.40 l ha in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala where it is sown in rabi as compared to 6.57 l ha last year.
Coarse cereals have so far been planted in 61.23 l ha against 60.12 l ha by this time last year. Area coverage of Jowar is 48.57 l ha in comparison to 47.68 l ha during last year; barley, 5.81 l ha as compared to 6.00 l ha; maize, 5.30 l ha as compared to 5.11 l ha this time last year.
