Shri Priya Ranjan Das Munishi, Minister for Water Resources has stated that he would begin his bilateral talks with the chief ministers of states on interlinking of rivers in India soon.

Inaugurating a National Seminar on "Interlinking of Rivers in India" organised by Sathyabama Deemed University, here today, the Water Resources Minister said that the peninsular zone will get the first priority. Shri Oscar Fernandes, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Jeppiaar, Chancellor, Sathyabama University, Dr. S. Rame Gowda, former Chairman AICTE and Dr. N. Manoharan, Dean were also present at the function.

Shri Priya Ranjan Das Munshi also clarified that the conceptualistion of the project on "Interlinking of Rivers in India" was initialised in early 80s, envisaging inter basin transfer of water from surplus basin to deficit ones with a view to minimise the regional imbalances and optimally utilise the available water resources.
