Six Round Table Conferences have already been held for preparing a draft action plan for achieving the objective of strengthening the Panchayati Raj Institutions in the country and the Seventh Round Table Conference is scheduled from 17th to 19th December, 2004 at Jaipur. In these Round Table Conferences all the aspects to strengthen the Panchayati Raj Institutions have been discussed. In the first Round Table Conference held at Kolkata on 24-25 July, 2004 the subject of Gram Sabhas was discussed. A resolution was passed by the Ministers in charge of Panchayati Raj and their representatives for recommending to their respective Governments measures suggested by the conference for joint acceptance by the Centre and the States in respect of Gram Sabha. This information was given in Lok Sabha today by Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar, Minister of Panchayati Raj in reply to a question by Shri Kamla Prasad Rawat.

In reply to another question by Smt. Karuna Shukla, the Minister said that the Union Government had no proposal to provide honorarium to Sarpanches as it was for the state governments to take a decision in this regard.
