RAJYA SABHA
The Government seek to sustain mangrove forests in the country by both regulatory and promotional measures. The Coastal Regulation Zone Notification (1991) under the Environmental Protection Act (1986) recognises them as CRZ-I (I) which implies that these areas are afforded protection of the highest order. Under the promotional measures, the Government has identified 35 mangrove areas on a country-wide basis for intensive conservation and management.
An assistance of Rs. 327.02 lakhs has been given for Mangrove areas in the country during 2003-2004 for activities like survey and demarcation, afforestation, restoration and protection measures and education and awareness.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment And Forests Shri Namo Narain Meena in a written reply to a question from Shri S. M. Laljan Basha in the Rajya Sabha today.
