Indian Railways earned Rs.480.96 crores in excess of the budgetary target of Rs. 21520.05 crores during the first half of the current fiscal year ending September, 2004. Actual earnings were Rs. 22001.01 crores. The Railways also effected a saving of Rs. 151.70 crores. Accordingly, the actual expenditure incurred was Rs.17095.17 crores against the budgetary target of Rs. 17246.87 crores .

Passenger traffic also recorded a growth of 5.6 per cent over the target of 3 per cent during the period. A total of 2373.59 million passengers travelled by Railways compared to 2524.10 million passengers during the corresponding period of the previous year. This represented an increase 149.49 millions.

As for punctuality of mail and express trains, target of 90 per cent was improved by 91.8 per cent on broad gauge. The punctuality on metre gauge also improved to 96.8 per cent from the target of 95 per cent, during the period.
