Indian Railways earned Rs.792.73 crores over and above the target during the first seven months of the current fiscal year ending October, 2004. It earned Rs.25948.46 crores against the budgetary target of Rs.25287.97 crores, registering additional gross earnings of Rs.660.49 crores. In the ordinary working expenses, the Railways effected a saving of Rs. 132.24 crores.
In the area of passenger services, the Railways carried 3126.20 million passengers compared to 2951.36 millions during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 174.84 millions.
The punctuality of mail and express trains on broad gauge increased to 92.5 per cent against the target of 90 per cent. The punctuality of metre gauge mail and express trains increased to 97.7 per cent from the target of 95 per cent.
