The Union government is considering a relief package for the coffee sector to solve the credit related problems facing the industry. The Tea Board has also proposed a programme for the replantation and the rejuvenation of the old tea bushes in various tea gardens across the country.
Both the Tea and Coffee Boards extend subsidies to the respective industries under the 10th Plan schemes. The subsidy extended by the Tea Board covers activities such as replantation, rejuvenation, pruning, creation of irrigation facilities, modernisation of the processing factories etc. The Coffee Board is extending financial assistance in the form of subsidy to the industry to improve productivity through replanting, water augmentation, quality Upgradation, pollution abatement etc. In the year 2003-2004, 183.07 million kilograms of tea and 232684 Metric tonnes of coffee were exported.
Shri EVKS Elangovan, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha here today.
