Indian Railways have laid on a total of 25,406 route kilometres Optic Fibre Cable (OFC), out of which electronics has been provided on 21,357 route kilometres.

On Indian Railways as a whole, 40,000 route kilometres OFC has been planned.

So far, 169 important cities and 1736 other stations have been connected on OFC. A total of 1,110 route kilometres OFC has been laid during the current fiscal year ending November 2004.

OFC has been commissioned on 7,903 route kilometres on the Golden Quadrilateral and diagonals covering 86 per cent of such routes.

OFC connectivity between four Metros-Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and four mini Metros—Ahmedabad, Pune, Secunderabad and Bangalore is now complete.
