The Government proposes to set up a target for growing jatropha and kanuga plants in large scale for yielding oil to be used in lieu of diesel in vehicles.
Jatropha nursery has been raised for undertaking plantation in 1563 ha. And plantation has been organized in 1147 ha. Accordingly, karanja nursery has been raised for undertaking plantation in 1047 ha and plantation has been completed in 676 ha by the Ministry of Agriculture. The nursery raising and plantation in an area of 6020 ha. For jatropha and 865 ha. of karanja is being organized during 2004-05 in the State of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh., Maharashtra, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttranachal and West Bengal.
Jatropha starts giving economic yield from 3rd year of plantation and karanja from 6th year.
Shri Kanti Lal Bhuria, Minister of State for Agriculture gave this information in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
