nlc supplies power to southern states

Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Department of Coal generated 16388.98 million units of power in 2003-04 as against 14969.95 million units in 2002-03 and 14451.32 million units in 2001-02 . The lignite production during the year 2003-04 was 205.57 lakh tonnes as against 186.24 lakh tonnes in 2002-03 and 183.69 lakh tonnes in 2001-02.

Geological reserves of lignite in the country have been estimated at around 35,636 million tonnes (MT). Out of the above 4,150 MT spread over 480 sq. km. is in the Neyveli Lignite fields in Cuddalore District of which around 2,360 MT have been proved.

NLC is one of the major suppliers of power to the Southern States including Tamil Nadu, which exclusively consumes the power from TPS-1. Power from TPS-2 is distributed among Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Pondichery.
