On Panchpatmali Hills in the Koraput district of Orissa, a fully mechanized opencast mines is under operation since 1985, serving feed stock to Alumina Refinery located in the foot hills.
The present capacity after expansion is 48 lakh tonnes per year (tpy).
Alumina refinery is in operation since 1986 located in picturesque valley of Damanjodi. The present capacity is 15.75 lakh tpy.
Aluminium smelter, located at Angul district of Orissa is based on energy efficient, state-of-the-art French technology from M/s. Aluminium Pechiney (180 KA) and is in operation since 1987. The capacity has been expanded to 3,45,000 tpy.
Close to the Aluminium Smelter, a Captive Power plant of 960 MW (8x120 MW) capacity has been established to feed power to the smelter.
Coal fired thermal power plant with captive rail system for transportation of coal from Mahanadi Coal Fields.
On the inner harbour of Visakhapatnam Port in the Bay of Bengal, NALCO has a mechanised storage and ship handling facilities for export of alumina and import of caustic soda.
The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs has recently approved its second phase expansion at a cost of Rs.4,091 crore. The capacity after second phase expansion will be as under :
