mines minister to present national mineral awards tomorrow

The Union Minister of Mines, Shri Sis Ram Ola will present the National Mineral Awards - 2002 to the winners in a function to be held here tomorrow. These awards are given annually by the Ministry of Mines for outstanding contributions in various fields of earth sciences, mining and allied areas including geology, geo-physics, geo-chemistry and their applied branches. The scheme was introduced by the Ministry in the year 1966.

So far, 435 geo-scientists have received the coveted National Mineral Awards and four geo-scientists have been honoured by the National Mineral Award for Excellence. The Award for Excellence - 2002 goes to Dr. Harsh K. Gupta, Secretary, Department of Ocean Development. Dr. Gupta, an eminent Geo-Scientist, has brought glory to the earth science through his outstanding contribution in the fields of geo-physics, earthquake and ocean development. Another 18 scientists will receive the National Mineral Awards - 2002 for their individual achievements or in groups in different fields of earth sciences.
