The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy has said that the passing away of the doyen of Indian classical music M.S. Subbulakshmi, has left a void in the countrys cultural heritage. In his condolence message from Goa, he lamented that the demise of M S. Subbulakshmi, popularly known as the Nightingale of Carnatic Music, marked the end of a tireless journey of a humble and humane musician par excellence.
M.S. Subbulakshmi, with her strong moorings in the countrys secular traditions, had shown to the younger generations that devotional music had no religious overtones and artificial barriers of language and religion cannot overcome pure music which encompasses one and all. Her empathy for the poor, sick, downtrodden and helpless transcended all barriers and brought to the fore the fact that the very essence of Indian Music is to sooth, heal and remedy, Shri Reddy said.
With the demise of M.S. Subbulakshmi, the nation has lost a messiah of peace, unity and amity and younger generations of musicians should strive to emulate the high and lofty ideals for which the great musician stood for all through her life, Shri Reddy said.
The Information & Broadcasting Secretary, Shri Navin Chawla in his message said that in the passing away of M.S. Subbulakshmi, the Indian music has lost one of its great exponents. It was a personal loss to him as he had been a great admirer of the doyen of Carnatic Music all along, he added.
On behalf of the Information & Broadcasting Minister and Secretary, wreaths were placed on the body of M.S. Subbulakshmi by Shri T.G. Nallamuthu, Additional Principal Information Officer, Press Information Bureau, Chennai.
