All Sectors falling under Infrastructure recorded positive growth during April-October 2004, compared to the performance in the corresponding period of last year. The only exception was provision of new telephone connections. During the month of October 2004 also, all sectors except net addition in switching capacity of telephone exchanges, new telephone connections and crude oil production, registered higher growth compared to the same month last year. As far as achievement for the month is concerned, all sectors except power, finished steel, fertilizers and crude oil production exceeded their target. Cumulatively, all sectors except finished steel and fertilizers exceeded their targets. This is stated in a Report issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for the period April-October 2004.
The power generation during October was 1.1 per cent lower than the target, but the over all generation during April-October was 0.2 per cent higher. Coal production during the month was 0.8 per cent higher, while cumulatively it was 3.1 per cent more than the target with the total production at 198.59 million tonnes. In case of Finished Steel, production during October was 16.6 per cent less than the target and cumulatively 16.4 per cent lower at 22.66 million tonnes.
The Railway revenue earning freight traffic during the month was higher by 6.9 per cent than the target and cumulatively 2.1 per cent more with a freight traffic of 335.20 million tonnes. Major ports handled 33.92 million tonnes of cargo during the month registering a growth of 8.3 per cent and cumulatively 1.8 per cent.
Telephone switching capacity addition during October was 5.8 per cent lower than October 2003. New telephone connections during the month was also lower by 29.5 per cent. Cumulatively new telephone connections were 36.4 per cent lower. New cell-phone connections registered much higher growth during the month as well as in the cumulative period.
Fertilizer production during the month at 1.41 million tonnes was 0.9 per cent less than the target and cumulatively 8.93 per cent lower. Cement production was higher by 1.4 per cent and 0.7 per cent more cumulatively. Production of crude oil during the month at 2.88 million tonnes was 1.2 per cent lower than the target, while the over all production during April-October was higher than the target by 0.7 per cent. Production of natural gas was also lower by nearly two per cent during the month under report.
In Civil Aviation, the five international airports handled 39906 metric tonnes of export cargo during the month registering a growth of 26.3 per cent and cumulatively 11.9 per cent higher. Import cargo handled at these airports was also higher during the period. Passengers handled both at the international and domestic terminals were also higher during the period. In case of Road Sector, 2856 kms. of national highways were upgraded during April-October, nearly 36 per cent higher than the target.
